Handmade Christmas: Cowl & Hat

handmade 5I love the slip stitch cowl of many colors patterns.  It is a GREAT stash buster and makes the coolest fabric, I am always so excited to see what is coming up next.  I used this set of yarn for this cowl and also this hat.  I hope that the recipients enjoy wearing them as much as I loved making!

Happy Christmas from the Posse

This year’s unconventional card manifested in us being at the beach.  We go to the beach, but we are not beach people… I mean, look how white we are, really.2013 Glass Family Christmas Card FrontThese photos were a few that we got back from the GO PRO workshop we modeled for with Blue Lily.

I have lost track of who shot the top one, but it is probably one of the lady’s I linked to here.  If it’s you, let me know in the comments so that I can link!

Reyna Malley’s shot made it to the back side!Glass Family Christmas Card 2011 BackI love adding a QR code, though I see that only about 10% of those I sent a card to have scanned and viewed.  I hope to see that number rise over the years as this technology blows my mind.

Busking for Santa: The Finale

Ok. My plans for busking over the weekend completely went to pot.  Friday night Jason came down with the stomach flu, which I can only imagine was what Pickle had that Monday when she threw up on set at Bloomingdales.  I immediately started taking oscillococcinum to prevent the dreaded flu from gripping me. So far so good.

I was going to busk in the morning on Saturday for a few hours, but I could not leave this man with these children.  Instead I just finished all the projects.  It ended up being a good thing as I underestimated the time it would take to finish everything.

Monday morning came and I was all set to go out busking for a few hours but Jason pointed out that I had a lot of shopping to do.  I started around 10 and literally did not finish the shopping and the wrapping until around dinner time…he was right. No time to busk.

I was disappointed that I didn’t sing more and earn more.  I definitely went over the budget of what I earned, but it was totally worth it.

The whole family spent about an hour wrapping and sorting and labeling gifts and then it was time to deliver.

We definitely wanted to see the family see the gifts, so we actually parked RIGHT across the street and hid in the car.  It was already dark out so we just ducked down and watched.

RING.

I ran into the car and took my spot.  In case they didn’t hear the bell, I phoned and disguised my voice as Santa’s: “Ho, Ho, Ho! Santa has left you some presents downstairs!” click.  Jason teased me about that the whole way home.

The daughter came down and just stood there staring.  I saw her arms go up in a questioning pose.  Then she turned to go back inside and get help.  She had locked herself out, so she started shouting to them upstairs.  The Dad came down and she was saying something in a high pitched loud voice and hugging him.  Then she started down the street: “PRESENT PERSON WHERE ARE YOU?”  She stopped looking and started bringing everything in.

The little boy came down and I think she said: That’s your bike! ~Mine?  Man, they could tell it was a bike . (ok, it IS hard to wrap a bike).  I could see her glancing this way and that trying to find the person, but she NEVER looked across the street and NEVER at our car.  I wish we had rolled the windows down because she was talking a lot and I wanted to hear what she said!

It took several minutes for them to get everything in…then the second young daughter came down and she was looking around too.  We are very confident that they did NOT see us, but we saw them, and the 5 of us packed in our car watching a Christmas miracle was something I will not soon forget.

Upcycled Cashmere Baby Blanket

I’m an aunt again! I have a new baby nephew!  I needed to make him a gift!cashmere 2I scored some deals on a few cashmere sweaters at the thrift shop a while back and tucked them away until I had enough to make a baby quilt.  I ordered a few more cashmere up cycle pieces on etsy and then went to work constructing my blanket.

After I finished the quilt top, I headed to the fabric store looking for the perfect backing.  I think I pictured something baby blanket soft, but ended up being drawn to this sweatshirt fabric.  I think it is a cool mix with the cashmere top, sweatshirt back and cashmere yarn ties.  I hope he likes it for the 2 seconds he is small enough to.

Oh Christmas Tree

This year was my first year helping with someone else’s Christmas card!  Ariel was the idea guy and I was the execution guy….well I guess the hair and makeup was my baby so it was a collaboration.

Here is their card:

MARTIN CHRISTMAS CARD FINAL

And here is the accompanying bonus video.

I am pretty proud of how it turned out especially considering I had my new camera basically on auto the whole time and we spent about 3-4 hours on the ENTIRE production.

Handmade Christmas: Necklaces

This Christmas I have been bitten by the embroidery and cross stitch bug.  I whipped up a few items for some friends of mine.

handmade 3Roller derby!

handmade 2I’m most excited about this one.  My friend’s dog died this past year and It thought it would be nice if I paid tribute somehow.  I worked really hard on this and I think I did a great job (if I do say so myself.)  Carrie thinks so too.

Busking for Santa: Hour 12

Of course I wanted to return to the spot where Hour 11 was a Christmas miracle. Pickle and I ate a good breakfast, got in our busking gear and headed out.

We found our spot, sang a song and a half and then the cops approached.

I have seen many a cop pass me on this journey and also, I went to the cops first before I even began this project to make sure I followed all the rules.

You can’t be here.
~What? I’m so surprised. I asked the cops before I started this project and they said I could sing anywhere. Cops passed me yesterday.
Here?
~Yeah, here. I’ve been doing this since the 2nd and I have never been stopped.
Yeah but you have the baby and the weather.
~I have had all 3 of my kids out doing it. We are raising money for a family in need (reference bag)– I showed this bag to a cop before I even started to make sure I wasn’t breaking any laws.  You’re just being a Scrooge today?

[Yes, I was still smiling and jovial, trying to sincerely win them over]

Our bosses are here today and we are cleaning up, Bloomberg is coming.
~Well, of course I am going to go, but I just don’t understand, because I thought I had covered all my bases. I made $150- here in one hour yesterday…I only do it for an hour, the baby usually sleeps.
~You can’t have the baby here
Then I started to cry and said: I’m sorry I am just so disappointed because I have a goal of raising $1,000 and this is such a great spot to do it.

[wiping my tears, gathering up my things]

the SECOND cop chimes in:

Just walk a block down to the 57th street stop, I’m sure you’ll make [adds emphasis here] $200 dollars in an hour.

I walk, dejectedly away.

Seriously though it took me a long time to recover, and I kept thinking it through in my head and I just thought the following:

I BOUGHT MY BABY A LITTLE SUIT SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS PURPOSE.  WE HAVE BEEN OUT IN MUCH WORSE WEATHER…PLENTY OF COPS HAVE SEEN ME, PASSED ME, SMILED AT ME!  CLEANING UP? ARE YOU LOOKING AT ME? I EVEN WASHED MY HAIR TODAY! FULL FACE OF MAKEUP, I DON’T LOOK POOR I AM NOT STANDING IN ANYONE’S WAY I AM SINGING ABOUT JESUS!

I DO THIS FOR ONE HOUR AT A TIME, IT’S NOT LIKE I AM SITTING ON THE FLOOR NURSING MY BABY WITH A CARDBOARD SIGN IN WHICH I HAVE WRITTEN MY LIFE’S TALE AND AM EXPECTING PEOPLE TO PAY FOR MY LIFE

THIS IS CHARITY!

DO YOU KNOW WHAT LOGISTICAL COORDINATION IT TAKES TO EVEN BE STANDING HERE RIGHT NOW? DO YOU KNOW HOW FRIED MY VOICE IS BUT I JUST KEEP GOING BECAUSE ALL I CAN THINK ABOUT IS NEXT WEEK WHEN WE DROP THESE GIFTS OFF AND SURPRISE SOMEONE?

SERIOUSLY DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY DRUG DEALERS JUST PASSED BY RIGHT NOW WHILE YOU WERE HAVING THIS CONVERSATION WITH ME AND NOW THEY ARE GOING FREE AND I AM STILL A HUNDRED DOLLARS AWAY FROM MY GOAL? YOU INTERRUPTED THE FIRST NOEL!

And then I went shopping which helped a little. NOT WITH BUSKING MONEY!

And then I told my tale to the cops that stand outside of Bloomberg’s house.  I told them everything, they listened intently and then said:” I think you should go back and sing,” and gave me 5 bucks.

So, now what?
