Crochet: Modern Alchemy Afghan

When I heard a friend was being booted out of her apartment because of a stupid rent hike, I knew I needed to present her with a house-warming gift. I love crocheting afghan’s because I spend hours thinking about the recipient.  It makes me feel closer to a friend, and they never know!

Pattern.

Yarn.

I almost didn’t finish my only Christmas crochet gift in time for the holiday.  In fact, due to an altercation with the ups man, it was still a few days late. Grrrr…..

I like how it turned out though.  It was for a friend who really likes blue and red combination of colors, so I did the best I could.

A different friend snapped a photo of my crocheting and trying to look like an old hunched over Grandma….I am not sure if it worked.

AKA: ANXIETY AFGHAN

I started this afghan over probably 4 times before I really got going on it.  Once after doing about 20 rows.  I didn’t realize that I was increasing each time….I made up my own pattern, which wasn’t really a pattern, I just needed to make sure I skipped a sc before the last one of each row, because I put 2 sc’s in the last of each row to help keep it straight.  A little tip I learnd on youtube.

It took almost a year to finish because I would set it aside for my chevrons (chevron #3 will be pictured before the end of the year and #4 is about 4 rows in) .  I crocheted the bulk of this afghan when I was completely anxious over whether or not Lolly would be admitted into my first choice school. (it was around this time carrie sent me KEEP CALM AND CARRY YARN sign).  I vowed if she got in, I would give it to one of the decision-makers, but when she was wait-listed I got rid of that idea.  I guess I could still give it to them, but it feels so anti-climactic now.

I like knowing who I am crocheting for while I am crocheting it.  In this case, I am going to keep it in a safe place until the right person comes along for me to give it to.  Maybe my therapist.

I ran out of the lighter dark purple and the light purple to complete the pattern situation I started on the right side there (bottom left photo)…so I improvised and made something up for the second half. I think it turned out pretty good.  It’s nice and heavy and soft for a new baby girl scheduled to debut in a few weeks.  And it whipped up in about a month.
