When I was growing up, there was a lot of talk about BYU. Many of my peers headed there for college and tons of girls came back the summer after their freshman year, engaged to be married. I just couldn’t get excited about going that far away from home and surrounding myself with people just like me, and I knew I definitely did NOT want to get engaged my freshman year.
Instead I headed to DePaul University in the heart of the north side of Chicago, met a BYU alum and married him after my freshman year. I would not go to BYU, but apparently BYU came to me.
I have been watching my husband get dorked over BYU football for the past 13 years, and sadly for him I have just not ever understood the obsession or the excitement about it. This fall he decided it was time for his girls to experience the magic that is BYU Football. I tried my best to be the best Cougar adoptee I could be, including donning a Cougar cheerleading outfit.
Attending the game helped me to understand what the big deal is, but there were a few things about the stadium experience that were new for me:
1. Almost everyone wore Cougar Blue.
2. There were lines 20 minutes long at every water fountain, fans refilling their water bottles.
3. Chocolate milk was sold there, in fact Lolly bought the last one, and we weren’t even to half time yet.
4. Babies! Babies everywhere! Several asleep on laps of moms, sitting outside the stadium near concession stands.
5. Not one swear word was heard by my ears, and beer was not spilled on me.
6. It was the most beautiful national anthem I had ever heard sung at a sporting event.
7. I saw one Indian man and one African American man, everyone else was white, white, white…pass the sunscreen.
Though it lacks diversity, it was a town that seemed full of family values and enthusiasm. I appreciate the kindness and the change of pace (SLOW) was refreshing for a few nights. As per cjane’s orders, I had myself a banana cream pie milkshake. It was next door to our hotel, couldn’t have been easier or more delicious. And thank you Marriot, you redeemed yourself from the London trip….giant king-size bed, no mysterious bug bites.
PS. I went on a date in UT to see Inception. I quite enjoyed it.

And once again I must comment on food…BANNANA CREAM PIE MILKSHAKE…lovely! And yay for family values! :)
Oh, and I love that you put on a cheerleading outfit. :) You looked very cute.
All the babies gets me every time too. Even when it’s an away game, BYU fans are easy to spot – so many guys wearing a baby on the front of them!
You made me laugh as you listed observations. You’re a darling Y adoptee. I am a definite U of Utah fan however if the Y is playing a big game against another team I will cheer for the Y.
